SCIENCE I Science I is an introductory course dealing with physical and earth science. Application of scientific principles, as well as technology, is a focus of this class. Science I students are encouraged to see the connection between scientific principles and everyday life. Students begin with introduction of basic laboratory procedures and the scientific method of discovery bases on interactive principles. Students will apply these principles throughout the course when working on various aspects of today's chemical and physical environment. An emphasis is placed on critical thinking and mathematical application. The class includes a variety of approaches to teaching scientific principles such as lectures, experiments, cooperative learning and research.
LIFE SCIENCE Life Science is taught mostly to the tenth grade student. Topics and objectives match those of the State, and thus of the Biology course. This class includes many of the same experiences offered in biology, including the field work. However, it emphasizes terminology and text far less. Most Life Science students work with a biology student "tutor". Students also leave both classes with a good idea of what to expect on the MEAP test as juniors.
BIOLOGY Biology is geared for 10th grade students who are likely college bound. It focuses largely on the Michigan Objectives for Biology and Life Science. During the course of a year students will study ecological topics, the classification and interactions of living things, human anatomy, cellular biology, and genetics. Proper scientific terminology is taught and stressed. Intensive emphasis is also placed on scientific thinking and bio ethics. Incorporated in this course is extensive field work where students actually measure the health of the Muskegon River at Henning Park and relate it to ecological theories they have learned.
HEALTH Successful completion of one trimester of Health is required for graduation. While it is primarily comprised of freshmen it can be completed at any time during one's high school tenure. Topics that are covered include physical fitness, nutrition, substances of abuse, infectious and non-infectious diseases and human sexuality. The purpose of the class is to give students a foundation of information that will help them make informed choices in life that can directly impact their level of health throughout their lives.
GLOBAL SCIENCE Global Science is a 11th-12th grade course designed for students that need a third year of science. It is an integrated science course that uses the Earth as its focus. Topics are integrated between all of the different sciences: geology, biology, ecology, chemistry, and physics. It is a class that emphasizes every day activities and labs that relate to current environmental and world issues. Topics vary from plate tectonics and minerals to earth's resources and population growth. It is designed to reinforce and build on various topical studies during 9th and 10th grade science courses along with providing opportunities for personal growth by working cooperatively.
ADVANCED BIOLOGY Advanced biology is an accelerated course for 11th and 12th graders that are on the college bound tract. This course centers on human (mammalian) anatomy and physiology. Cat dissection, microscopy and physiological tests reinforce the concepts covered during the year. Independent and group projects and papers are utilized to encourage practical application of the scientific method in problem solving as it relates to biological social issues.
CHEMISTRY Chemistry is an accelerated course for college bound 11th and 12th grade students. It is a comprehensive one-year class in basic chemistry principles. It is bases on intensive laboratory experiences designed around the scientific method to encourage the use of logic. Students must complete various independent and group papers and projects including "Chemistry in the Workplace" research.
CHEMISTRY II This is an advanced chemistry course. The concepts learned in Chemistry I will be reviewed briefly at the beginning of the course and new topics covered include equilibrium, thermodynamics, electrochemistry and kinetics. Significant time is spent in the lab learning lab procedures and techniques. Prerequisite: Completion of Chemistry 1 with a B or better and completion of Algebra II with a C or better.
PHYSICS Physics is an accelerated course for seniors with a strong math and science background. Physics is the study of matter, energy and motion. Some topics include: forces, velocity, acceleration, momentum, heat, waves, and light. ADVANCED EARTH SURVEY A class designed for college bound students that may have an interest in a field related to earth science. Students take a look at the 4 areas of earth science, including geology, oceanography, astronomy, and meteorology.
