Trimester Information

ART
Art classes in the high school are sequential in nature. Skills and abilities are developed and build upon in each level of art class.

ART I (GRADE 9-12)
Students will use most of the class time creating art and learning art processes. Drawing, painting, printmaking, clay sculpture, collage, as well as other media will be explored. This will allow students to learn by doing and suggests many possible solutions that enables students to express themselves as individuals. Art appreciation, art history, and art vocabulary will be introduced.

ART II (GRADE 10-12)
Students will continue to explore, experiment, and develop skills in a wide range of media's as well as build upon and broaden areas developed in Art I. Students will be encouraged to work on independent study projects in areas of student interests and talents. Art appreciation and art history will be continued beyond Art I level.

ART III (GRADE 11-12)
Students will continue to explore, experiment, and develop skills in a wide range of media's but will have more class time in areas of personal interests. A portfolio of art work will be developed by each student. Students will be especially encouraged to participate in community and school activities that will showcase their work and talents. Art appreciation and art history will be continued beyond the Art II level.

ART IV (GRADE 12)
Students will have about half of the class time to develop skills in areas of personal interest and talent as well as continuing to develop skills in other art media's. Students will develop an art portfolio of their work. Students will be encouraged to participate in community and school activities that will showcase their work and talents. Art appreciation and art history will be continued beyond the Art III level.

BAND
High school band consists of many different areas. Marching band, concert band, Solo and Ensemble, and much more The Marching band performs at all home Varsity Football games, parades, and at several area marching festivals. The rest of the year is spent in concert band. Students will learn and improve new skills on their instruments. The concert band performs three concerts a year. Students will participate in MSBOA festivals, Honors Band, and play for commencement in the spring.

JAZZ BAND
This is a small class for students interested in jazz music. Students will learn about different jazz styles and forms. The Jazz band performs at several area festivals and during home girls' and boys' basketball games. You must either be in High School band to participate in jazz band or have approval from the director.

COMPUTER APPLICATIONS
This course is usually a semester computer course. The primary focus is on creating projects using Microsoft Office Software-Excel, PowerPoint, Access, and Word. The inter net is used as a tool to gather information for these projects. We also learn how to create web pages using HTML codes. Each student is allowed to create a web page and post it on Newaygo's home page in spring.

COMPUTER TECHNOLOGY
This course gives students foundation skills in computer operations. It develops technical skills needed to survive and succeed in today's high tech world both in their personal and their professional life. They will use the Microsoft Office software package, which includes word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Access. They will also use Microsoft Publisher to create special forms such as newsletters and brochures. The Internet is used as a research too in preparing a topic report; and for becoming aware of information sites such as on-line newspapers and magazines.

TECHNOLOGY EDUCATION
This class allows students to explore various career fields using the latest computer technology. Fields include electronics, robotics, structural engineering, manufacture design, and others. This is a self directed course where students log on to a module and follow interactive instruction on the computer. Hands on project culminate 25 day units.

DRIVERS EDUCATION
Beginning with the November 2003 drivers training class, students will be required to pay a two hundred fifty ($250.00) dollar fee to take the segment I phase of the program. The fee must be paid prior to taking the class. The fee is non-refundable should the student drop or is removed after the class begins. Students that take drivers training must meet or exceed the minimum NHS academic athletic eligibility standards to take segment I and II of drivers education. The most recent completed trimester grade period before the start of class would be use to determine eligibility. Segment II will cost twenty five ($25.00) dollars.

RECREATIONAL PHYSICAL EDUCATION
Students will be introduced to individual and life time sports. They will review and play all the team sports they had in Physical Education I, but they need to learn activities that they can be involved in as adults. Physical conditioning and CPR are also taught in class.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION I
Students will be given varied physical activity through team sports, individual and dual sports, mass games, and other varied programs. Participation in all activities is emphasized. One semester is required.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION II
This class is a continuation of skills learned in Physical Education I. Students will participate in team sports, individual and dual sports, and mass games. Emphasis will be placed fundamentals and rules, with special emphasis on total participation.

FITNESS CLASS
Students will learn wellness and nutrition awareness. They will work on developing individual work out programs for maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

SHOP
A one-year general shop class with emphasis on woodworking, plastics, and basic welding. Students learn to plan, build, and finish projects. Instruction on safe hand tool and machine operation is the main focus of class. The ability to measure and work with fractions is important.

DRAFTING I AND II
Drafting is the process of making neat, accurate drawings using equipment. The class teaches both mechanical and architectural drafting styles. Students complete drawings made in class and take quizzes that are turned in for points, used to calculate grades. The majority of time is spent making drawings in class, with students working at their own pace. CAD instruction included.

ACCOUNTING
This is a yearlong course geared for juniors, with some sophomores and seniors. It provides foundation skills in basic accounting procedures, record keeping, banking procedures, and payroll practices. Students participate in cooperative learning exercises and use leadership and teamwork skills.

INTRODUCTION TO BUSINESS
This yearlong course is open to all grade levels. It provides students with an exposure to the practices and principles of business. It provides students with an exposure to the practices and principles of business. It focuses on the role of business in our society it helps students comprehend what their relationship is to business and the economy in which they live. A major focus is directed toward preparing students to make sound decisions as consumers, wage earners, and citizens within a fast-paced, high-tech society.

LIFE MANAGEMENT A
Life Management A is a one trimester course that one may elect to take. Students of all grade levels engage in this class. In one part of this class students learn about nutrition, kitchen concepts, and basic food preparation skills. In the other part of the class students focus on personal development and look into themselves and their relationships with family, friends and significant others. Lastly, they will do some career exploration. Life Management A and B are separate classes and a student can benefit by taking just one trimester or both trimesters, A and B. The order in which trimester A and B are taken does not matter.

LIFE MANAGEMENT B
Life Management B is a one trimester course that one may elect to take. Students of all grade levels engage in this class. In this trimester students will have the opportunity to learn CPR, basic sewing skills and focus on family development. Students will be required to complete a sewing project and will incur a cost of approximately $12.00. Also, students will be asked to parent one of our Real Care babies and will be responsible for at least 48 hours of caring for this infant. Life Management A and B are separate classes and a student can benefit by taking just one trimester of both trimester, A and B. The order in which trimester A and B are taken does not matter.

SPECIAL EDUCATION CURRICULUM
Special Education students from Newaygo High School must meet the same credit requirements as regular education students. Each student who receives special education services has and Individualized Education Plan (IEP) which is updated every spring for the following school year to meet the students' individual needs. Because student needs differ, there are a few students not working towards a high school diploma. The IEP plan they follow focuses on work related skills rather than a general knowledge base.
